Did you know that your skin is the largest organ of the human body? You may not have even known
that your skin is an organ, but it is and an important one. In fact many dermatologists believe
that by taking proper care of your skin can be of significant benefit to your overall health.
Your hair, nails and skin certainly include a role in your appearance but they also are a defensive
shield against the environment, disease and infection.
It is known that the skin works together with the other organs of the body. If skin problems can be
avoided it is recommended to do so, particularly while pregnant. This means discussing all potential
use of herbs, vitamins, medications and even ointments with your doctor if you are or are trying to
become pregnant.
It is extremely important to properly care for your skin by following guidelines such as:
- Wear daily sunscreen of at least SPF 15
- Wear protective clothing including a hat while outside
- Wearing gloves while working with chemicals such as detergent and dish soap
- Proper diet and nutrition
- Using a moisturizer and mild cleansers if your skin is dry
- Regular visits to a dermatologist
Your nails are composed of a hardened protein called keratin. Keratin is found in the hair and skin
as well. Many diseases and other serious conditions can be diagnosed by examining a patients nails.
Many problems with nails occur because of cosmetic use; these include irritation, allergic reactions,
and infections from certain cosmetics. In most instances, once a problem has been identified it is
treatable.
Other than washing and styling our hair, proper care is often neglected. UV rays, heat and chlorinated
water can be a dreadful for hair and scalp. Proper hair care recommendations include:
- Using a conditioner with an SPF factor
- Wearing a hat while outside
- Proper diet and nutrition
- Beware of sun activated hair lighteners, try a small amount of lemon juice instead
- Do not go in chlorinated water too soon after a perm
- Condition your hair before entering a pool with chlorine, wash and condition after exiting the pool
- If a significant amount of time is going to be spent in the pool, look for a hair clarifier which
is a stronger than normal shampoo designed to remove toxins.
It is evident that the hair, skin and nail play important roles in our overall health and it is important
to care for them. The recommendations for proper care outlined above are extremely important including
a proper diet and nutrition. For those of us who cannot always eat a proper diet there are supplements
designed to support the essential vitamins and minerals for hair, skin and nail support.
