We often take our vision for granted, we figure hey we have always been able to see well and expect this to continue. However as we age a variety of eye problems can occur in everyone. These troubles include:
- Macular Degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Floaters
- Flashers
- Dry Eye
Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a large health concern that usually affects those 55 and older. It is the most common cause of vision loss for the aforementioned age group. It has been suggested by nutritionists that a diet rich in anti-oxidants begun early in life may minimize ones chances of developing ARMD. It is important to note that once ARMD begins it is not a reversible process by nutrition alone. Aside from age other factors that increase the risk for ARMD are
- Obesity
- Family history
- Race
- Gender
- Hypertension
- Smoking
- Junk food
Regarding Glaucoma, there is no scientific evidence that demonstrates dietary intake can help alleviate or minimize the condition. However there are new forms of eye drops that help to preserve the optic nerve. In addition eye drops made from the active drug in marijuana THC can lower the pressure in the eye providing benefits for those with Glaucoma.
For those with other eye maladies such as cataracts, floaters, flashers or dry eye, nutrition and/or supplementation has not been shown to offer any benefits for these conditions. However for general eye related health and the potential to reduce age-related macular degeneration, a supplement designed to promote ocular health may be helpful.
